![]() ![]() At the end of the steel leader comes my hook. I also attach a steel leader in the same swivel. If you fish in a river with current you want a heavier weight, but on a lake you get away with lighter weights. In this swivel comes a heavy weight sinker. I use thick monofil for the main line, but you could even use something like bank line or paracord. Silt particles can really dull an auger blade and I know folks in Alaska who do every single ice hole manually with a chisel rather than an auger cause their river is just loaded with particles. If you fish in a silty river you may want to invest in an ice chisel rather than an auger. Usually we see more like 3 feet at this time of the year. In this case the ice was just over 2 feet (after a mild winter!). With sharp ones it is a matter of a few minutes to go through even thick ice. Dull blades take forever to cut through the ice. Most important is to keep the blades in immaculate shape. The 6" is so much faster than an 8" and I never caught anything that would not have made it through a 6" hole. I don't ice fish enough to justify a motor auger, plus I like the lightweight manual one that I can easily carry around, pull on a little toboggan or take in my dog sled on multi-day trips. The water under the ice should be at least 5 feet, with 10-20 feet being the most successful depths for me.ĭrill a hole in the ice. But it is legal here to just let the lines sit for up to 24 h. We usually stay out on the ice overnight and enjoy a nice campfire and some good cooking, while we keep checking the lines in the dark. I was just out with friends and thought I share with you how we do it. March or early April works great as the burbot are active, the temps are mild and the days are already getting longer.
